Flightless: An Asexual Videogame

Flightless was a solo project produced within the Fall 2022 semester at Marietta College to be presented at the Marietta College Senior Art and Design Capstone Exhibition. It is a 2D role-playing game that aims to educate players on asexuality and it's many spectrums through interacting with different characters in the game. You can play it at the link below!

I designed a website to go along with the game. It gives in depth information on the game's development, concept art, characters, and asexuality. Due to cost the website was converted into a video which can be seen above.
The Characters above are "A", the protagonist, and the kiwi that "A" is on a journey to find in the game. The researcher presented between the two is one of the characters that "A" can choose to follow at the end of the game for an alternative ending.
There was a lot of concepting that went into the creation of Flightless. This concept art was later repurposed to assist in the creation of pixel art. This simpler art style was more compatible with the time constraints and created a more lighthearted atmosphere for the game. This helped make learning about asexuality seem less daunting while playing.
Each animation for "A" was created by looping a series of images to create a fluid movement. As part of the research for the project I watched several videos of kiwis walking to maintain accuracy. Proper timing was also taken into consideration to make the movement more believable.
The game consists for four different zones, each representing a different biome. "A" begins in a jungle setting and then continues on to the seaside, marsh, and forest. The zones were created in different shapes to create diversity. As an easter egg the shapes were turned into letters to form the word "cake", a reference to on of the more well known asexual saying "I would rather eat cake."
Jungle
Above are the tiles used to create the game's tilemap. Each zone is made of a different set of tiles to give them a unique appearance.
The Characters, as seen above, are Aro, Flux, Litho, and Spike. Each was created based off research of their bird species and associated spectrum of asexuality. They also given an accessory that matches that reflects their personality and dawns the colors of their flag.
Seaside
Above are the tiles used to make the hills in the seaside area. They were created separately and then layered above the regular tilemap to allow for collision.
The Characters, as seen above, are Caed, Demi, Gray, and Idem.
Marshland
The Characters, as seen above, are Eras, Fray, Quoi, and Reci.
Rocky Outcropping
The Characters, as seen above, are Aego, Aro, Cupio, and Ficto.
This piece was created to be the cover icon for the game.
"A" was 3D printed in the Marietta College Science Center to later make an appearance at the Art Capstone and All Scholar's Day events at Marietta College.
Above is the setup used for the Marietta College Art Capstone exhibit. All of the characters were placed within borders according to their zone and had information about them listed below. 3D printed models, stickers, a QR code to the website for phone viewing, and more were created for the display. The game was playable via the computer.
